CURITIBA AND REGION
CURITIBA IS THE BEST CAPITAL IN THE COUNTRY IN BASIC SANITATION, ACCORDING TO NATIONAL SANITATION INFORMATION SYSTEM (SNIS) AND ABES RANKING.
URBAN DRAINAGE
The first urban park in Curitiba, Passeio Público, was built in the end of the 19th century, as a sanitation project, that is, a large work of macro drainage and revitalization.
Barigui Park, the most visited and one of the oldest in the capital of Paraná, was created in 1972 with the intention of containing the floods and preserving the native forest of the Barigui River basin in the region. Currently, there are more than 20 parks that have a drainage function in Curitiba.
WATER SUPPLY
The first Water Supply System in Curitiba was implemented after 1910. The water reservoir is a beautiful art nouveau architectural complex, currently a cultural heritage of engineering and architecture in Curitiba. The Water Supply System currently serves 100% of Curitiba's population.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT
The inaugural Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWP) was established in the late 1970s. It stood as one of the most cutting-edge facilities globally and marked Brazil's debut of the Carrousel-type Activated Sludge system, known as ETE Belém. The state of Paraná took the lead in propagating anaerobic processes, a move that significantly propelled the growth of the sewage treatment rate within the region. Consequently, Paraná now boasts the largest array of WWTPs with Anaerobic Reactors in Brazil.
SEWAGE SLUDGE
Paraná was a pioneer in the country in recycling sewage sludge in agriculture, bringing benefits to society and the environment.
ENERGY GENERATION
An energy generation plant powered by sewage sludge and organic waste is currently in the initial implementation phase. This facility is located next to the WWTP Belém in Curitiba, an aerobic treatment station with a capacity of 840 L/s, which has been operational since 1980.
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
During the 1980s, Curitiba pioneered the establishment of Brazil's inaugural landfill, adhering to all engineering standards. Additionally, during the same decade, the city implemented a selective waste collection system and built a Waste Valorization Plant
